Miss Claremont was present as well, although it was no secret Byron took as much pleasure in Miss Godwin, the Doctor, or the goats he kept as pets, as in the woman he called his lover. Lord Byron and his Teacher, the Doctor, grown tired of the laudanum and debauchery, embarked instead on creating tales of horror and the fantastic with their guests, the poet Shelley and his mistress Mary Godwin. Lord Byron – 1816 Villa Diodati, Switzerland He’s obviously getting some payoff from it - a buzz? a thrill? a vicarious life? - but I think we’ll need more data points to figure out exactly what that is. However, with Kronos, Byron and now MacLeod, he keeps putting himself into situations that could get him killed. The question, as always, is why? One would think a true cynical survivor, as Methos so loudly proclaims himself, would stay as far away from the limelight as possible. Methos is drawn to strong, charismatic Immortals, and places himself carefully within their orbits, but still enough in the shadow so that any undue attention falls first on the leader. Granted, we only have two data points to work from - or three, if you count his current friendship with Duncan MacLeod - but I think that’s enough for a preliminary hypothesis. Without the manic rages there would be no “Don Juan.” Without the chasms of depression, no “Childe Harold.” Without the needle and the bottle, no triple-platinum “Meet The Undead.” In all his incarnations - poet, playwright, lyricist, pop star - one thing remained true. I’m sure he’d be the first to say - and more eloquently than I - that one cannot exist without the other. For 200 years he was a madman and a genius. For all I know, it was probably Byron himself. Someone once said that when someone like Byron dies, the stars burn a little less brightly.
